Chidambaram said the charges in the ED's press note were a "crazy mixture" of falsehoods and conjectures.

Karti is being probed for receiving alleged kickbacks in getting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to Malaysia-based Maxis to invest in Indian telecom company Aircel when his father was the Union Finance Minister.

He further said that Chidambaram himself was a finance minister for a long time in the country and he is well aware of the functioning of ED and other economic departments in the government of India.

Stung by Enforcement Directorate attaching assets worth Rs 1.16 crore of his son Karti and the firm allegedly linked to him, former Union finance minister, P.Chidambaram, on Monday alleged that the action was meant to "intimidate me and to silence my voice".

The FIPB approval was supposed to go to Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs, however, Chidambaram approved it on his own and the amount for FIPB clearance was wrongly projected to hide the facts.

P. Chidambaram said the ED's press note on its action against his son was meant to intimidate and silence him.

The agency said a company promoted by Karti Chidambaram and a nephew of P Chidambaram received about $200,000 from a Maxis Group company for a legal compliance software. "Approval was granted in the normal course", he said in a statement. "I will not be intimidated". On September 22, the CBI had claimed in the Supreme Court that a lookout notice was issued against Karti Chidambaram to prevent him from travelling overseas as he was closing several of his foreign bank accounts, according to PTI report.

Chidambaram also added that 'suitable action in accordance with the law shall be taken once the order is served'. The deal is being probed by both ED and CBI, and the case is a part of the overall probe in the 2G scam case.

Earlier this month the CBI asked Karti to join investigation. The agency is probing the Aircel-Maxis deal after taking cognisance of a CBI FIR in the case.
