Florida evacuees catch last flight to DFW before Irma landfall

More than a dozen flights cancelled at Jacksonville International Airport

Six flights from Columbia Metropolitan Airport were canceled Monday while a seventh was delayed as the outer bands of Tropical Storm Irma swept across the Southeast.

At least 10 airports in Florida had suspended flights or announced their intention to do so by Saturday evening.

Additionally, as Irma makes it's way inward, there are no flights above most of Georgia either. A turn toward the northwest is expected by late Saturday.

All major US carriers were waiving change fees to the region.

Travelers can expect more cancellations next week as Irma heads toward Atlanta, the world's busiest airport. Delta operates its busiest hub there.

The airport said that 17 scheduled flights were cancelled for Friday, September 8, 2017, a number likely to change. The final flights took off just after 5:40 p.m. ET, according to FlightStats, and the airport won't resume commercial flying until Tuesday.

Thousands of flights have been canceled as Hurricane Irma churns toward the USA mainland.

"Customers with itineraries involving Atlanta Monday afternoon through Tuesday are encouraged to use delta.com to change their travel plans", wrote the airline in a press release.

Cancellations also were building in Savannah, near Georgia's coast.

The terminal had remained opened for over 600 guests and another 40 stranded passengers who could not find lodging. And American Airlines was briefly under an FAA ground stop in Miami due to rerouting outbound aircraft.

The carrier flew several relief flights to Orlando with the Boeing 747.

The closure came after major airlines evacuated as many people as they could out of the Hurricane's way, while also giving their staff ample time to prepare for the storm. On the forecast track, the eye of Irma should continue to move westward away from the Turks and Caicos Islands and toward the southeastern Bahamas overnight.
