U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Thursday it will award contracts to four companies to build four concrete prototypes for the wall.

Customs and Border Protection's acting Deputy Commissioner Ronald Vitiello announced that the top designs for a concrete wall that will be built along the San Diego border will be from four companies.

Other companies selected to construct concrete border wall prototypes are Caddell Construction Co. of Alabama, Texas Sterling Construction Co. and W. G. Yates & Sons Construction Co. of Mississippi. Through the prototyping process, CBP may identify new designs or influences for new designs that will expand the current border barrier toolkit that CBP could use to construct a border wall system.

"The prototypes will inform future design standards, which will likely continue to evolve to meet the U.S. Border Patrol's requirements", according to the CBP release. Trump is now demanding that Congress fund the wall and has threatened to shut down the government if it doesn't do so.

The Department of Homeland Security has estimated the cost of the wall at $21 billion.

Fisher Sand & Gravel Company, based in Dickinson, was one of the companies awarded a contract to build concrete prototypes for the southern boarder wall.

The four contracts are worth up to $500,000 (£387,000) each.

The walls will also need to feature cable conduits and other design features for sensors and cameras.

"All those things have to be combined in the proper mix to make it work", Vitiello said, saying each location will be evaluated for the different options. Vitiello said that will be "as quickly as we can", ideally in two weeks.
