Gay Marriage Advocates Prepare for Australian Postal Vote

Equal marriage survey form from the Australian Bureau of Statistics

Then, the survey results will be announced on November 15, after which the issue will be voted upon in federal parliament.

The non-compulsory ballot, which runs until the end of October, will determine whether Australia becomes the 25th country to legalise same-sex marriage, while also healing a rift in the Government.

As Australians prepare to take part in a postal vote on the issue of same-sex marriage, anti-gay propaganda has been circulated around the country and "scaremongering" adverts have aired on TV.

The ballot's unusual format was decided after the election promise of a national plebiscite was rejected twice by parliament's upper house.

A new Fairfax/Ipsos poll suggests some 65 per cent of those surveyed are "certain" to complete the postal survey, and of those seven out of 10 will tick "yes" in favour of marriage equality.

The poll, conducted between late August and early September, showed that 58.4 percent of those surveyed supported a "yes" vote, down six percentage points from just two weeks earlier.

"Now that the decision on marriage equality is so close, it would be empowering to think that this [rally] could cause such a great change for our nation", Copley said. We can win this thing.

Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull is one of those supporting a yes vote in an upcoming postal vote.

They have encouraged all Australians to vote. It is also criticized by same-sex marriage supporters who say the survey is needless and that the debate should go straight to parliament. "You've got five years until I'm 18 Australia!"

People have until November 7 to vote by mail and the results are expected on November 15.

If most Australians vote "yes", the government will move for a parliamentary vote, but will not do so if there is a "no" outcome. The Australian Bureau of Statistics insisted it had appropriate measures in place to stop people rorting the system.
