Go-Ahead Given to Allow Aussies to Vote on Same Sex Marriage

If most Australians vote "yes", the government will move for a parliamentary vote, but will not do so if there is a "no" outcome.

The High Court challenge against the legality of the 122 million Australian dollars (97.5 million USA dollars) postal vote was lodged by two parties last month, after the government's push for a plebiscite was voted down by the parliament and postal vote ordered in its place.

Paperwork relating to the survey will begin arriving people's letterboxes from September 12.

The petition was released on Wednesday, the day before the High Court unanimously rejected two legal challenges to the Turnbull Government's postal vote on gay marriage.

People from both sides of the campaign have come out to denounce the sellers, including Australians for Equality's Tiernan Brady and the Australian Christian Lobby's Lyle Shelton. Members of the public, government and media alike awaited the decision on Thursday, with those outside the courtroom constantly checking the website for a result.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics insisted it had appropriate measures in place to stop people rorting the system. The results of the poll will be announced on November 15.

Pansy Lai, a Sydney doctor who had appeared in a campaign for the "no" vote, has spoken to SBS Mandarin about her work for the campaign.

Opinion polls show that most Australians want same-sex marriage legalized, but many advocates question how representative of Australian attitudes the postal survey would be.

The postal vote was subject to a legal challenge from LGBT groups who insisted that right-wing Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was overreaching his authority.

MORE than 16 million Australians are enrolled to vote and will be eligible to participate in the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey. It was "putting to the public a vote on [Marlowe's] family unit".

"All Australians deserve the same opportunity for love, commitment and happiness", said the Human Rights Law Center's Anna Brown.

So we campaigned with confidence about the country we wished to a full part of and with a positive, engaging and respectful approach that aimed to win people over, not to beat them over the head. "This is a serious discussion about real people's lives", Mr Brady said.

"We would seek to align the protections available in this process as much as possible to what would apply in the context of an election", he said.
