Google launches appeal against €2.4 billion European Union fine

Alphabet launched an appeal Monday of the EU's $2.7 billion antitrust fine

As expected, Google (GOOG +0.5%, GOOGL +0.5%) has appealed the record €2.4B fine lobbied against it by the European Union, shortly before a deadline to do so.

The EU fined the internet giant for abusing its dominance in Europe to position its own shopping comparison service at the top of Google search results.

The Commission said the US company, a unit of Alphabet Inc, had to stop the practice by September 28.

The move sets up a court battle between Brussels and the internet giant that could take years to resolve and make already tense relations between Europe and the U.S. tech giant even more fraught.

The watchdog found that Google handed its comparison shopping service an illegal advantage in 13 European Economic Area countries, including in the United Kingdom and Germany where it was launched in 2008.

The clock ran down and incoming Competition Commish Margrethe Vestager wasn't in a mood to play nice.

A spokesman then said that Google "respectfully disagreed" with the ruling.

Google had been given 90 days to stop the favouritism or face a penalty of up to 5% of the average daily turnover of its parent company Alphabet.

It will still have to pay the fine but can put the money in a locked account until the court reaches a decision on that appeal.

Google said declined to comment further.
