H-bomb test over Pacific would be 'game changer', says Trump official

President Donald Trump addressing the United Nations Sept. 19 2017

Moscow, Sep 22 Russian Federation is "deeply concerned" by the escalation of tensions over North Korea, the Kremlin said today, after US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un exchanged stinging barbs.

South Korea said it was the first direct statement of its kind by a North Korean leader.

Kim's Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho told reporters Pyongyang might now consider detonating a hydrogen bomb outside its territory.

This would allow the United States to target individuals, businesses and financial institutions that help North Korea, he said. North Korea has conducted six nuclear test explosions since 2006, all at its northeastern underground test site.

Vipin Narang, a nuclear strategy expert at MIT, said such a test could pose a danger to shipping and aircraft, even if North Korea declares a keep-out zone.

Speaking at a United Nations meeting in NY late on Thursday, North Korea's foreign minister Ri Yong Ho said the country could consider a nuclear test of "unprecedented scale".

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un complained in a defiant statement released by North Korea's KNCA state media of Trump's strong statements, saying they "had never been heard from any of his predecessors".

It's the latest escalation in a suddenly personal war of words between the two leaders that's stretched back weeks, unfolding as North Korea has showcased an enhanced nuclear missile capability.

Trump mocked Kim as a "rocket man" on a suicide mission in his United Nations speech, which was his most direct reference to military action so far against the North, which conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test on September 3, reports Reuters.

"Pretty sick burn on our president, to which I have to say, knock it off, North Korea", Colbert said of Ri's comments.

"Once we can assess the nature of this threat, the president will make a decision regarding the appropriate actions", Tillerson said, adding that Trump would receive advice from the National Security Council and others but that, "ultimately, it will be his decision". Asked for comment last week, the Foreign Ministry said China has always fully implemented United Nations sanctions on North Korea but opposes "unilateral" restrictions imposed by another country on Chinese entities. China, responsible for about 90 percent of North Korea's trade, serves as the country's conduit to the global banking system.

Before we talk about two grown men threatening to lob nuclear weapons at their respective countries, let's deal with the really important question: What the heck is a dotard? Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said he had spoken at length Thursday with the head of China's central bank but "I am not going to comment on confidential discussions".

Evans Revere, a former State Department official and expert on East Asia, said Friday he believes the North is intent on launching an intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, like the Hwasong-14 on a combat trajectory to determine the survivability of a mock warhead. North Korea hinted that it might test a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean.
