It gradually lost strength and weakened to a tropical storm by Monday morning as it headed toward Georgia, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said at 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT).

Hurricane Irma knocked out power to about 5.8 million homes and businesses in Florida, even as the storm weakened as it crept up the state's west coast, according to state officials and local electric utilities. St. Maarten, a major global destination for US and European carriers, was in ruins after the storm. "We were in shock when we went outside", Garcia, 34, told CNN. Sustained winds of 46 miles per hour (74 km/h) with a gust to 72 miles per hour (117 km/h) was recently reported at Tamiami Airport in West Kendall, Florida.

USA state officials and utilities said outages were in power & light's service area in the southern and eastern parts of Florida, Reuters reported.

"We are nervous about this", she said.

Concern also gripped Canadians further away from the centre of the storm. A 13-year deputy of the county's sheriff's department, and an unnamed correctional institute sergeant.

In Cuba, the destruction along the north central coast was similar to that suffered by other Caribbean islands over the last week as Irma plowed into Ciego de Avila province.

- More than 1.1 million customers in Georgia were without power, according to Georgia Power and Georgia EMC.

As the storm made landfall on the Florida Keys archipelago off the tip of southern Florida, torrential rains and lashing winds knocked out power to almost 800,000 homes and businesses on the mainland, according to utilities, Reuters reported.

That's because some islands are extremely hard to access.

Amid urgent warnings from state officials to evacuate before it was too late, downtown Miami was all but abandoned on Saturday.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said almost 30 states had deployed personnel and resources to help with the response to Irma.

"We are dealing with satellite phones and those landlines that are working to try to get information out", she said.

Over the next two days, Irma is expected to push to the northwest, into Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.

With about 3 million people, the Tampa Bay metropolitan area is the second-most populous in the state.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said the situation was not as bad as it could have been but warned residents that unsafe storm surge continued. Of particular concern are the Florida keys, a tropical archipelago which is home to 70,000 people, as no area of the islands is higher than 20 feet above #Sea Level. Storm surge, debris and downed power lines still present a danger to large swaths of South Florida and the Gulf Coast. "It's the worst storm I've ever seen", said Bill South of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Irma was at one point the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic, with winds up to 185 miles per hour (298 kph).

This is the first year on record that the continental United States has had two Category 4 hurricane landfalls in the same year.

Major carriers have largely closed up shop at Florida airports after flying as many passengers as possible out of the path of the storm and giving their staff time to prepare.
