Authorities said they evacuated more than a million people overall as a precaution. The most extensive damage was likely in the Naples area, but a full assessment was ongoing. "We anticipate that the restoration effort will be measured in weeks, not days".

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office warned people in evacuation zones A and B along the St. Johns River to "Get out NOW".

Also approximately 146,000 customers with Georgia electric membership cooperatives did not have power at 10 a.m.

Ocean waters around the Keys were filled with hazards, including sunken boats, AP said. Of course, it's expected that pilots would avoid the state as a result of the risky conditions caused by Irma, but regardless the radar image is still very powerful. Shredded awning whips in tropical storm winds at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club as Hurricane Irma hits Fort Lauderdale. And across the Caribbean, another 24 people were killed on other islands.

And in cities across Southern Florida, a storm surge turned roads into rivers. FOX 5 Storm Team's Joanne Feldman said wind gusts will be strongest from about 2 p.m. until midnight.

As of 8:00 am local time, Irma's center was about 105 miles (169 km) north-northwest of Tampa and about 30 miles (48 km) north-northeast of Cedar Key. Wind speeds had slowed by the time Irma reached the Florida Keys on Sunday, and the storm had been downgraded to Category 4. Photo by Marco Island Police.

In Naples, near where Irma made its second landfall in southwest Florida after initially striking the Keys, winds reached as high as 142 miles per hour. About 220,000 of those people have ended up in shelters.

Irma is still forecast to move away from North Carolina.

This means impacts will be low for central North Carolina. Miami saw winds up to 159km/h. "Do continue to stay updated on the weather in your area, and do make sure to have a plan if weather conditions worsen".

Chase said, school cancellations were due to possible high wind gusts Tuesday morning.

The main concern in Atlanta will be tropical storm force winds that extend out from the eye of the storm.
