"The conditions will be ripe for tornadoes", says News19 Hurricane Expert Jim Gandy.

The National Hurricane Center released a public advisory at 7 p.m. on Sunday night saying that the eye of Hurricane Irma was "hammering Fort Myers".

Hurricane Irma made multiple landfalls over the past week, devastating islands in the Caribbean before reaching Florida on Sunday morning.

President Donald Trump declared Florida a major disaster area Sunday, a step that will release federal aid funds for storm victims more quickly.

But Irma isn't done yet.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia, confirmed that Atlanta - more than 250 miles (400 kilometers) inland from either the Atlantic or Gulf coasts - was under a tropical storm warning for the first time. A storm tide, which is defined as a water level rise due to the combination of storm surge and the astronomical tide.

Another hurricane, named Jose, has already strengthened to an "extremely risky category 4" storm, the National Hurricane Center said on Friday. So when the winds did their turn about 2 or 3 a.m. Monday morning, they weren't strong enough to cause the storm surge forecasters had predicted.

Hours after Mayor Rick Kriseman praised the resilience of his city's improved sewer system, the city spilled 430,000 gallons of partially-treated sewage on Monday afternoon after Hurricane Irma moved north.

Monroe County residents - those hardest hit by Hurricane Irma - should call FEMA at 800-621-3362 if your home was destroyed during the storm. The smaller French island of St. Barthelemy, which is nearby, also was badly damaged.

Tropical storm warnings were are in effect for the Lowcountry of SC.

BOTTOM LINE: What About South Carolina?

Valdosta, near the border, is under duress, said Ashley Tye, head of emergency services in Lowndes County. Heavy rains are causing rivers to swell, and significant flooding is possible over the next five days, both along the Florida peninsula and in southern Georgia.

As daylight returns to Florida, the damage inflicted by Irma is becoming clear.

Irma was the strongest Atlantic storm to ever exist outside of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico with 185 miles per hour sustained winds.

"What happened was the storm continued - after interacting with Cuba - to move west-northwest", Jones said.

Catastrophe modeling firm AIR Worldwide has estimated the storm has already done about $20 billion to $40 billion damage to insured property in Florida. A huge airborne relief mission was dispatched yesterday to assist with recovery efforts.
