Hurricane Irma on collision course with Florida

Hurricane Irma toll hits 10 increasing threat for Florida

Irma was a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour and is forecast to remain at that strength when it comes ashore someplace south of Miami on Sunday. But by the time Irma arrived in the middle of the night Monday, its winds were down to 100 miles per hour (161 kph) or less. Many areas have been inundated and trees have been uprooted. And there's plenty more to come.

In Florida, the state's biggest electric company said its outages dipped to 3.3 million from a peak of 3.6 million earlier on Monday.

On the other hand, Hurricane Jose which was supposed to follow Irma's path moved towards open waters sparing the hurricane Irma hit Caribbean Islands. So we need to simplify the tax code, reduce taxes very substantially on the middle class, and make our business tax more globally competitive.

The storm is now changing its course and is set to hit parts of Georgia, Alabama and SC. "This is a life-threatening situation".

In one of the country's largest evacuations, about 5.6 million people in Florida - more than one-quarter of the state's population - were ordered to evacuate and another 540,000 were told to leave the Georgia coast. Now Ploghoft and three others are holed up with stockpiles of water, canned food and battery power.

At least 34 people were reportedly killed across the region, including 10 in Cuba, whose northern coast was raked by the storm. Streets flooded, and flying objects such as coconuts turned into risky projectiles. And at least one construction crane snapped, swinging vigorously over downtown Miami. "It's fantastic. It's under water".

The City of Miami distributed 6,000 bags of sand in the parking lot of Grapeland Water Park, allowing residents to take six bags each.

The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center lessens the impact of the storm for much of North Carolina.

- Miami-Dade County announced a curfew between 7 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has already declared a state emergency for all 159 counties as Irma barrels toward the state.

The White House says President Donald Trump has received a "comprehensive update" on Hurricane Irma. The storm headed north on Monday towards Gainesville and Tallahassee, taking unsafe wind gusts with it, ABC News reported.

Officials adjusted the evacuation plan for Irma as forecasts shifted the storm's predicted path further westward.

- Irma's center will move near the northwestern coast of the Florida peninsula Monday morning and into southern Georgia in the afternoon, and through southwestern Georgia and eastern Alabama tonight and Tuesday, the center said.

"It's the worst storm I've ever seen", said South, the NOAA meteorologist. More than 1 million people were evacuated from flood-prone areas. Police are urging residents to stay indoors and not venture outside.

- A storm surge warning wraps around the state, from Brevard County to Tampa Bay. "This storm is powerful and deadly".

Those who did not evacuate ahead of the storm are in danger, Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Brock Long said Saturday.

"These are all material things that can be replaced", Freeman said. "We've got to work hard to get them their power back".

Mass evacuations jammed highways heading north and created a severe gas shortage in some parts of the state.

As the hurricane's eye approached the Florida Keys early Sunday, 60-year-old Carol Walterson Stroud and her family were huddled in a third floor apartment at a senior center in Key West.

The combination of shear and instability that a hurricane offers still produces small supercell storms that are more likely to spawn tornadoes than ordinary thunderstorm cells, NOAA said.

It was forecast to head north toward Florida in the evening.
