Gov. Nathan Deal issues state of emergency for 6 coastal counties ahead of Hurricane Irma

Gov. Roy Cooper said businesses and people in North Carolina should be prepared for anything that Hurricane Irma could bring to the state.

It killed at least 26 people before leaving the Caribbean for Florida. Winds were recorded at 125 miles per hour as of Saturday afternoon, and the storm was "moving west at 9 miles per hour and is expected to turn north and head up the western coast of Florida, making landfall on Sunday", according to ABC News.

At the current time, Irma has been downgraded to a category three storm, but with as much as it has changed over the course of the last week, it could potentially upgrade back to a four or a five at any time.

"The bad news is that this is some big monster", he said, adding: "Right now, we are anxious about lives, not cost".

The second one, in Marco Island, left the island without water and power, authorities said. "Don't go out and play in it", he said. "This is the time to stay where you are". But that could change if the weather becomes warmer later in the day, Okulski said. Meanwhile, Miami Beach announced that due to the harsh weather conditions, its rescue teams are no longer responding to emergency calls. By early Monday, almost 272,000 customers mostly in coastal and south Georgia were without power after Irma crossed over into the state overnight.

While the storm is expected to weaken slightly, it will still remain a powerful hurricane as it moves through Florida. Petersburg area, once thought to be relatively safe from harm, suddenly found itself in the storm's crosshairs. That would have put the hurricane over the east coast of Florida. "As the storm moves north, the strong winds will arrive in places farther north as well", said Spann. "We anticipate that the restoration effort will be measured in weeks, not days". Tampa International Airport shut down operations at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The center of the hurricane made landfall in the Keys at 9:10 a.m.

While considering how the city would react, Buckhorn quoted boxer Mike Tyson, saying, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face". "We've got roads that are impassable, so everybody's got to be patient as we work through this".

"I was just riding the storm out, like many people here in Downtown Miami", said resident Gideon Ape, who heard the crane crack.

"So look out for your neighbors, take care of each other", he said. "It's been strong enough to knock us over". "This is what we do".
