Irma gains strength, targets Florida after raking Caribbean

Flights are expected to restart Tuesday morning, September 12.

Hurricane Jose looked a little ragged on Monday morning but still had winds of 105 miles per hour.

The storm was 400 miles wide when it blew ashore Sunday. That means getting out of the house and around town might not be safe until - gulp - Monday.

The declaration authorizes the use of federal funds for the counties of Charlotte, Collier, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Pinellas and Sarasota.

The National Weather Service in Atlanta issued a tropical storm watch for the area Monday and Tuesday.

Rick Scott says at least 76,000 people are without power as Irma unleashes winds and rain on the state.

The Washington Post reports that the storm surge also raised water levels eight feet in two hours in Naples, with a rise in coastal water levels between 10 and 15 feet possible in other areas in the state. A fifth shelter was opened in Greensboro on Sunday. And now - in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean - Hurricane Jose is waiting.

The first, at about 9.10 a.m., was over the Florida Keys, an isolated string of islands. Luckily for Key West, Irma arrived at low tide.

Irma, downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, is expected to hit southern Georgia by Monday afternoon, said the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in a Monday update. Three storm-related deaths have been reported, as Irma moves northwards.

Irma, which killed at least 22 people as it tore through Caribbean islands toward Florida, has already claimed at least one life in the state. Cities flooded, power lines were downed and trees were uprooted across the state. Gov. He said the curfew was needed to "clean up the debris" and allow the utility company to "get in to restore power".

Late Saturday, Hallandale Beach ordered residents of the De Soto Park South Condominiums to boil their water, as a precaution against drinking water dirtied during the storm.

Some 6.5 million people, about a third of the state's population, had been ordered to evacuate southern Florida as the storm approached the U.S. mainland after pummeling Cuba with 11 metre waves and ravaging several smaller Caribbean islands.
