Hurricane Irma: What you need to know

As the storm moves northwest toward the Metro Atlanta area, the southern and coastal regions of Georgia are being battered with strong winds, heavy rains and flooding dangers. Capsized power lines, surging waters, fallen trees and blocked roadways greeted them.

It killed at least 26 people before leaving the Caribbean for Florida. Most of the outages are in Savannah, Ga., and the surrounding areas.

The storm crashed into Cuba late on Friday, with sustained winds of more than 157 miles per hour (253 km per hour).

Almost 60 percent of all Florida electricity customers were left without power, affecting about 5.8 million accounts, and some outages could persist for weeks or even months. Officials closed major bridges.

Flooding filled the streets of Miami, Naples and parts of Tampa, according to CNN. Meanwhile, the authorities are investigating a number of looting incidents that were reported.

The person filming walks along the wooden jetty and down onto what would normally be the sea bed but there is no water as far as the eye can see.

While Hurricane Irma has lost a significant amount of strength, it is still a risky storm that continues to pound Florida.

In St. Augustine, on the state's northeast coast, streets were flooded as the hurricane moved up the Florida peninsula. "I don't have any numbers on fatalities at this point".

Florida Governor Rick Scott warned citizens that it is still too risky to be out on the roads, and sheriff's officials in Jacksonville told residents not to drive through standing water.

Michael Rivers of North Lauderdale, Fla., said losing power took him from "anxious before and during the storm, to bored and angry after due to the loss of power.it's hot".

Broken tree branches block roads in the Coral Beach neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale.

The storm is expected to travel northward in Florida to Ft. This is the longest any cyclone has maintained that intensity on record, according to Phil Klotzbach, an atmospheric scientist at Colorado State University.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander is expected to visit the island Monday to show his support for local residents and the emergency services working to restore infrastructure and begin the process of reconstruction.

And more than 120 homes were being evacuated early Monday in Orange County, just outside the city of Orlando, as floodwaters started to pour in.

Six deaths in Florida have been blamed on Irma, along with three in Georgia and one in SC.

The storm was moving west at 12 miles per hour with winds of 100 miles per hour.
