Hurricane Jose: Do not think it is over just yet

Florida State, Florida cancel football games because of Irma

President Donald Trump approved a "major disaster" declaration in Florida on Sunday, authorising "federal funding to flow directly to Floridians impacted by Hurricane Irma".

The storm weakened early Monday, with meteorologists downgrading it to category 1, the National Hurricane Center reported.

The hurricane came ashore on the mainland as a Category 2 storm, flooded parts of down town Miami and knocked over construction cranes there as winds exceeded 100 m.p.h.

"Along with the high wind threat, another concern will be the potential for life-threatening storm surge inundation along and near the Southwest Florida Gulf Coast as the storm exits", the weather service warned West Central Florida. See some examples below.

Hurricane Irma is nearing Ft. On Sunday, Irma claimed its first United States fatality - a man found dead in a pickup truck that had crashed into a tree in high winds in the town of Marathon, in the Keys.

While Hurricane Irma has lost a significant amount of strength, it is still a risky storm that continues to pound Florida. Earlier Sunday morning, Irma had 130 miles per hour winds.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said Irma's wrath is unprecedented, warning that storm surges could be deadly.

"The forecast track takes the center then into Georgia tomorrow and ultimately with the system weakening, becoming a tropical depression by Tuesday", Ed Rappaport of the National Hurricane Center said.

Tropical Storm Irma lashed Jacksonville, Fla., on Monday with steady rain and 50 miles per hour wind gusts after leaving millions in the state without power overnight, weather officials said.

Some 6.5 million people, about a third of the state's population, had been ordered to evacuate southern Florida.

Farther north in South Carolina, Boeing said it was suspending manufacturing operations starting on Saturday morning. Officials say they are conducting assessments on Monday, and while they are optimistic flights will resume on Tuesday, no official decision has been announced.

Rain will move into north Alabama this morning and spread westward through the day.

Instead of following the footsteps of Hurricane Irma and ravaging islands of Antigua and Barbuda along with other Caribbean Islands, Jose followed a northerly direction sparing these region from more damage.
