Hurryiet: Germany's Merkel rejects total ban on arms exports to Turkey

Erdoğan slams NATO worries on Russian S-400 deal

Relations between Turkey and Germany have taken another blow as Berlin announced yesterday that it is putting arms exports to its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally on hold. A Turkish minister has slammed the move.

"Already made a deposit", reported several Turkish newspapers quoting president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Celik was speaking in London after German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said on Monday Berlin had suspended major arms exports to Turkey following increasingly strained ties between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

NATO's opposition to Ankara's planned procurement of the Russian air defense system was indicated earlier this summer by US Congress's decision to reject the sale of semi-automatic handguns to Turkish police.

In statements to German public channel NDR, chancellor said that Germany would respond to requests of arms sales on a case-by case, without specifying criteria it will use to evaluate requests. She also said she saw no reason to impose a travel warning for Germans travelling to Turkey, but said Berlin would keep its options open. "Those arms are being used in the struggle against PKK and Daesh", Celik said. "Germany should leave safety issues out of political discussion", he added.

Erdogan said: "The process will continue through a transfer of credit from Russian Federation to us".

But he said this was now not possible so that almost all arms exports were put on ice. "[NATO] does not monitor, promote, or facilitate such transactions", he said.

Turkish relations with several European Union states, including Germany, have deteriorated sharply this year.

Turkey was also pleased with Russia's response to the 2016 failed coup in Turkey, and the two sides have been working together in search of a solution to the Syria conflict.
