Iran is sticking to the nuclear deal, IAEA says

Iran rejects US demand for inspection of military sites

The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, travelled to the IAEA headquarters last week to press the agency to be more aggressive in its inspections regime, and to focus on Iran's military sites.

A US official said Thursday that Haley "did not ask the IAEA to inspect any specific sites, nor did she provide the IAEA with any new intelligence". The top United Nations official monitoring Iran's nuclear program, Yukiya Amano on Thursday Aug. 31, 2017, rejected Tehran's claim that its military sites were off limits to inspection, saying his agency needs to have access to all "relevant locations" if suspicions arise of possible hidden activities.

The comments by International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yukiya Amano are significant - his agency is policing the deal capping atomic activities that Iran says are peaceful but the US suspects are a covert pursuit of nuclear arms.

The Iranian diplomatic head said that the visits and inspections are determined by the agreement in the nuclear pact and that, according to the governing body of the topic in the world, Tehran has exactly fulfilled with that. "We just don't want to give them an excuse to". The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the agency's report has not yet officially been made public.

The deal was reached between Iran and the P5+1 countries - namely the US, Russia, China, France, Britain, and Germany - in July 2015 and took effect in January 2016.

"Iran's military sites are off limits". The government spokesman Mohammad Bagher Nobakht this week dismissed the campaign for military inspections as "a dream". "The British government, however, is fully committed to the JCPOA and to its successful implementation", the United Kingdom ambassador to Tehran, Nicholas Hopton, said in an interview published on Thursday.

Rouhani further stressed that regulations determine the framework of Iran's relation with the IAEA not Washington and its pressure.

IAEA monitors Iran's compliance via site visits, remote monitoring, containment seals, and satellite imagery. "The key here is the qualifier 'where the IAEA has questions.' The IAEA doesn't have a right to go on a fishing expedition". "If the IAEA requests information and remains unsatisfied with Iran's response, five of the eight members of the Joint Commission can vote on actions to resolve the concerns". Iran will never allow such visits.

"By insisting that the IAEA seek access to unspecified 'military sites, '" Kimball added, "Ambassador Haley is undermining the ability of the agency to get Iranian cooperation and access when it counts".
