Irma weakens into a tropical storm but keeps causing misery

Worst case scenario? Massive damage feared in Tampa as it awaits Irma’s wrath

Worst case scenario? Massive damage feared in Tampa as it awaits Irma’s wrath

The first hurricane warnings were issued for parts of southern Florida as the U.S. state braced for Irma, while some of those islands hit hardest by the storm prepared for Hurricane Jose, a category 3 storm following in Irma's wake with 120mph (195km/h) winds. Cuban state news media said most of those died in Havana, where Irma pushed seawater deep into residential neighbourhoods.

Irma was downgraded to a tropical storm, and then a tropical depression on Monday night, but the storm is still doing plenty of damage.

The storm will weaken as it travels over land. On Tybee Island east of Savannah, Holland Zellers was heading home to grab a kayak so he could reach a home where his mother had taken shelter near the beach.

Most Keys residents had followed mandatory evacuation orders, but there were some holdouts who had to hunker down as Irma tore over the island chain popular for fishing and scuba diving.

"There's a lot of homes that have water in the them right now", the city manager, Shawn Gillen, told the news outlet.

He said the island was "literally under water" and "barely habitable". Ms Brock said no injuries had been reported.

A similar warning covered parts of SC and most of eastern Alabama, where schools and businesses were closed.

Scott said 65 percent of Florida was without power. "We feel it was more risky to travel all over the state, run out of fuel possibly", he said, adding: "We're gonna ride it out". What's being called one of the largest evacuations in USA history followed as neighborhoods on both coasts left their homes, filling shelters and jamming interstates, as Florida faced its most serious hurricane threat in a generation.

As of Monday afternoon, 6.7 million homes and businesses were without power across Florida, according to the State Emergency Response Team.

Gastesi said officials will begin house-by-house searches today.

The hurricane's storms spawned numerous nerve-wracking tornado warnings. Seawater penetrated as much as a half-kilometre inland in places.

Georgia's coast was largely empty after evacuations were ordered for the second time in less than a year.

At least 25 people have been killed since Irma clobbered the Caribbean late last week.

The National Weather Service said flooding rains were a major concern on Monday, with 8 to 15 inches of rainfall predicted in south-east Georgia. Atlanta could see 50 to 60 miles per hour winds gusts between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. this evening.

Two people were killed in Monroe County, which encompasses the Florida Keys. "Obviously if it's a serious emergency, they will", Housley reported. A gust of 109 miles per hour was clocked in Pembroke Pines, with another of 90 miles per hour recorded at Palm Beach International Airport.

Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority suspended all bus and rail services on Monday and would decide later whether to resume operations on Tuesday, spokesman Erik Burton said.

As of Sunday, at least 24 colleges in Alabama, Georgia and SC have canceled classes in some capacity, while many more remain closed in Florida.

Florida Power & Light said in a press conference broadcast online Sunday that restoring electricity will be "one of the most complex" endeavors the utility's ever faced.
