"For the first time in the history of African democratisation, a ruling has been made by a court nullifying irregular election of a president".

Kenya's opposition leader, Raila Odinga, initially ignored the repeated advice from former President John Mahama, along with former South Africa President, Thabo Mbeki, to resort to the Supreme Court. (SOUNDBITE) (English) OPPOSITION PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, RAILA ODINGA, SAYING: "We have no faith at all in the electoral commission as now constituted".

In his reaction to the ruling, Mr. Kenyatta said he respects the ruling as much as he disagrees with it.

After the Supreme Court declared that a new poll must be held, many in Kenya wondered if Uhuru Kenyatta could win again or if Raila Odinga could rally enough support to knock off the incumbent.

Ahead of the decision, Kenya had been braced for a repeat of the unrest that followed the August poll, in which human rights groups said police killed at least 24 people.

In 2007, widespread violence broke out after another disputed election.

Many social media users tweeting on the issue said that the court's judgment was a victory for Kenyan democracy.

"Who even elected you?.We have a problem and we must fix it", he said.

But he also lashed out at the judges, saying "six people have decided they will go against the will of the people". Who they vote for may well depend on that information.

However, they warned that the 60 days within which a new election must be held will bring tension and anxiety, and the restraint of leaders and credibility of the new election will be paramount.

The Kenya Supreme Court said those results are no longer valid.

The president appears to have started campaigning for the new election, promising to transform the capital so that "people will think they are in London". Odinga's team focused on proving that the process for tallying and transmitting results was flawed - rather than proving how much of the vote was rigged.

The Kenyan supreme court, in nullifying the results of the election, cited "irregularities and illegalities" committed by the electoral board that harmed the integrity of the vote. "Majority actually belong to jail", Mr. Odinga said, insisting that the commissioners must be prosecuted.

Odinga also railed against the national election body, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, which said it would brief the press Friday afternoon local time.
