Jose weakens to tropical storm

Meteorologist Glenn Glazer has the 5 a.m. update on Hurricane Jose

It was located about 550 miles (885 kilometers) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and was heading northwest at 9 mph (15 kph).

Hurricane Jose could whip up potentially unsafe surf conditions and exacerbate beach erosion from Hurricane Irma.

The hurricane was located far from land but is generating powerful swells that were affecting coastal areas in Bermuda, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the southeast US, the National Hurricane Center said.

Tropical Storm Jose has strengthened back into a hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. This system has become much better organized since Wednesday and could become a tropical depression during the next couple of days before upper-level winds become less conducive for development.

The National Hurricane Center's forecast cone, which represents potential paths for the storm based on various models, had moved westward on Friday so it encompassed all of CT, as well as Boston.

Fox News said Jose was downgraded to a tropical storm late Thursday morning, but said forecasters believed it would become a Category 1 hurricane by the weekend. The center said the swells could cause "dangerous surf and rip current conditions".

After doing a loop-the-loop out in the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Jose appears poised to take a track up the East Coast. "A Tropical Storm Watch may be needed for a portion of the coast of North Carolina on Saturday".

The outer bands of the storm could produce rain in coastal areas on Monday evening and high winds on the Jersey Shore Tuesday. The storm's winds won't get close to land until Sunday or Monday - but it was formally declared a hurricane again on Friday afternoon.

The depression is expected to strenghten into a hurricane by 8 a.m. Tuesday.

While Florida continues to cope with power loss, gas shortages and flooding following Hurricane Irma, forecasters are monitoring two more systems that could develop into named storms as they move across the Atlantic.
