Kremlin used Facebook to promote political protests in US

"We must stop taking in Muslim refugees!"

Representatives from Facebook briefed Senate Intelligence Committee staffers last week on their findings about Russian political ad spending on the social media platform targeting Americans. According to the Daily Beast, SecuredBorders had 133,000 followers when Facebook closed it in August. "We demand open and thorough investigation of all the cases regarding Muslim refugees!", it continued.

Facebook told the outlet it had "shut down several promoted events" as part of its "takedown" of 470 Russia-linked accounts that spread propaganda last week.

Although numerous events had already been deleted from Facebook, some remnants still exist in search engine caches.

"I'm disappointed that when Facebook came and presented to the Senate Intel staff, they didn't lay out this incident", Warner said, adding, "It's one of the reasons why I thought last week the Facebook initial presentation was just the tip of the iceberg".

It remains unclear how many people actually showed up to that particular event-the Facebook event page lists four people as having attended.

It was hosted by "Secured Borders", an anti-immigrant group outed as a Russian stooge.

"Let's face it, the whole notion of social media and how it is used in political campaigns is the wild wild west", Warner said Tuesday, according to Recode. "I question whether Facebook has put near the resources they need into getting us all the facts".

In light of the discovery of the ads actively promoting Trump causes, the Campaign Legal Center, a Washington nonprofit group that advocates for more transparency in elections, said on September 12 that it sent a letter to Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg asking the company to publicly release the content of the alleged Russia-linked political ads.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is one congressional group now investigating allegations of Russian interference in the November elections a year ago and possible ties between President Donald Trump's team and the Kremlin. The Kremlin has dismissed the allegations and denied any involvement in the DNC hack.

Previously, Facebook disclosed that the Russian firm Internet Research Agency had spent $100,000 on Facebook ads but hadn't specified what these ads were about.

"Federal law has long recognised that American elections belong to Americans".

Facebook didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters reports that the company has already turned over information regarding these ads to Robert Mueller, the special counsel heading the Russian Federation probe.
