Lawmakers Approve Package Of Bills To Address California's Housing Crunch

In a last minute vote early on Saturday, California's legislature voted to approve a bill that would limit police cooperation with federal immigration authorities, according to multiple reports.

This year, California lawmakers have strengthened protections for undocumented immigrants, increased the gasoline tax and extended a program aimed at compelling businesses to reduce air pollution, all in opposition to federal policies. Jerry Brown's desk, after the state Senate on Wednesday approved Senate Bill 17 on a 31 to 8 vote.

The final version prohibits law enforcement officials from asking about a person's immigration status or participating in immigration enforcement efforts.

"The California State Sheriffs' Association (CSSA) remains opposed to SB 54 writing, "... limiting local law enforcement's ability to communicate and cooperate with federal law enforcement officers endangers public safety." .

The changes did not mollify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Thomas Homan, who said the bill will deliberately destruct immigration laws and shelter criminals.

The bill's approval comes less than a day after a federal judge blocked the Trump administration's rules requiring cities to help enforce federal immigration laws in order to receive funding.

Assemblyman Chris Holden, who held the measure in his Utilities and Energy Committee, said he would consider it again when the legislature returns in January for the second half of their two-year session.

California's lower chamber passed the bill on Friday.

The California Assembly has approved a multi-bill package to address the state's affordable housing crunch. For them, the bill delivers a rare victory during Trump's presidency, preserving some protections for people in the country illegally and adding others.
