After taking the captain's armband from Paul Pogba who limped off through injury after 20 minutes, Young provided the assist for the man who replaced Pogba as big Belgian Marouane Fellaini couldn't miss the chance presented to him.

Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford both opened their Champions League accounts as Manchester United returned to the competition with a 3-0 rout of Basel in their opening Group A match at Old Trafford on Tuesday. "But was his decision, I opened the door, he has a long-term contract, we have the option to bring him back on January 1, so is not a drama but is a decision which disappoints me a little bit". Now, in the Champions League, we could play Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Barcelona - those teams who all won the trophy many times.

But, while pleased with the result, Mourinho felt they took their foot off the pedal having gone 2-0 ahead early in the second half.

'We don't cry, no Paul for Sunday [against Everton], we have [Ander] Herrera, we have [Marouane] Fellaini, we have [Michael] Carrick, we have [Nemanja] Matic'. The former Chelsea boss accused United of taking their foot off the gas when they were 2-0 up and has called on his stars to resist the urge to play "Playstation football".

Pogba's injury was not the only thing that irritated Mourinho against Basel. "At times we caused them problems".

"I keep saying the same, he's a player with special qualities", Mourinho said.

"In my experience, muscular injuries stop you from playing for a few weeks, I think". "He does things some other can not, he gives me multiple positions and philosophy on the pitch".

"I would say that he is one of my most important players - even if sometimes I don't start with him".
