Powerful Hurricane Irma hits first Caribbean islands

The presence of three powerful hurricanes simultaneously in the Atlantic Basin is rare; it happened in 2010, though. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station shot breathtaking footage of Irma and Jose - the larger two storms - as they churned toward land.

Hurricane Jose has progressed into category 4 on Friday with maximum wind speed up to 250 km/hour, about 500 km east-southeast of the Northern Leeward Islands at 5 p.m. ET.

Jose has now become Category 3 hurricane on the 1 to 5 Saffir-Simpson wind intensity scale and the National Hurricane Center termed it as "major hurricane".

Katia is the 11th named storm this Atlantic hurricane season and follows both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Jose - both are off to the east in the Atlantic Ocean.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm is now centered about 145 miles (235 kilometers) south of the Gulf coast city of Tampico in a mountainous region dotted with small towns. The hurricane is expected to be nearly a Category 3 storm when it makes landfall in Mexico early Saturday. It comes after Hurricane Irma annihilated Saint Martin, Barbuda, and nearby islands. This is due, the center said, to an area of high pressure that will move around the hurricane over the next several days. Support from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton Power & Light and other local organizations helped provide assistance after Irma made landfall Sunday morning in the. The government of Sint Maarten has issued a Tropical Storm Warning as well.

The National Hurricane Center says Katia has weakened into a tropical storm as it moves further into Mexico, with wind speeds of up to 45 miles per hour (72.4 kph).

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for north of Cabo Rojo to Rio Panuco, and south of Laguna Verde to Puerto Veracruz, the National Hurricane Center said. Forecasters said this rainfall will likely cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in mountainous areas.

September 10 marks the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, which lasts until November 30.
