Nebraska AD 'angry, frustrated' after loss to Northern Illinois

With Big Ten play starting next week with a visit from bottom-feeder Rutgers, the Huskers and their fans envisioned starting 3-1 heading into October and a challenging league schedule.

For the second straight week, Nebraska fell in a road game on Saturday.

Nebraska quarterback Tanner Lee said he sensed some panic after he threw the first pick-six on the game's opening drive. In the last two games, he has attempted 88 passes and suffered seven interceptions - one nearly every 12 attempts.

After a three-and-out by the Huskies' offense to start the fourth quarter, Nebraska's offense came on the field ready to play. Nebraska's quarterback was hit from behind as he threw, and Huskies linebacker Jawuan Johnson picked off an angle route and took it 25 yards the other way for a score. Now, the Huskers are 1-2 this season, beating Arkansas State by only seven, losing at OR 42-35 - despite shutting out the Ducks in the second half - and falling to Northern Illinois. The Huskies were far from ideal, however, committing 15 penalties for 194 yards, while Hagan had field-goal attempts from 39 and 30 yards blocked. In fact, Nebraska outyarded NIU, 201-88, in the half and ran 43 plays compared to just 25 for the Huskies.

Ketter said that the friendships he has made as a Husker football player have stood out to him. The Huskers scored their first touchdown by taking advantage of Huskie miscue when Jalen Embry mis-handled a punt that rolled back to the NIU two-yard line and was recovered by Nebraska.

Nebraska marched 71 yards on 15 plays, ending the drive with a 36-yard field goal from Brown.

Lee led the Huskers on their final drive with three minutes left in the fourth quarter when he threw his third interception on the day, allowing the Huskies to run out the clock. Northern Illinois secured a 21-17 statement win in what looks to be a wide-open MAC West competition this season.

A penalty against Nebraska gave the Huskies a first down and from there, NIU went into victory formation to secure the win.

Running back Mikale Wilbon, starting in place of the injured Tre Bryant, rushed for 90 yards on 24 carries for the Cornhuskers (1-2). Morgan set career highs with seven catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns against Oregon.

But on the first offensive play after Nebraska's touchdown, NIU's Daniel Santacaterina connected with Christian Blake, who got a step on Nebraska corner back Eric Lee Jr., for 47 yards.

Gifford led the Huskers in tackles with eight total. Now Nebraska falls under.500 on the season after the upset, and looks like a pretender in the Big Ten West race before their conference season even begins.
