No military solution to Afghan conflict: Pakistan, Turkey

Pakistan has defeated terrorism, PM Khaqan tells int'l media

The Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said Pakistan is open to joint border patrols with the Afghan forces amid persistent USA pressures on Pakistan regarding the terror safe havens often blamed for the major attacks in Afghanistan.

Abbasi urged the United States to show more appreciation for Pakistan's losses in war on terror and its role in hosting 3.5 million Afghan refugees.

"We have defeated it (terrorism)", the prime minister said while talking a group of media representatives from worldwide outlets during an interview.

U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled his policies toward Afghanistan and South Asia last month.

In an interaction with foreign media persons in Islamabad on Tuesday evening, he said Pakistan supported peace and stability in Afghanistan more than any other country in the region.

But the Afghan officials and United States authorities have always been insisting that the leadership councils of the Taliban and Haqqani terrorist network are based in the key cities of Pakistan where they have freedom of action. They have noted that Pakistan has faced a lot of cross-border violence from Afghanistan since the 2001 USA invasion.

He said that Pakistan was open to bilateral verifications and joint patrols to screen the visitors who cross the border every day.

Pakistan has categorically rejected Trump's accusation.

He said the US-Pakistan ties were more than 70-year-old and should not be defined through Afghanistan.

He claimed the militants were actually based in Afghanistan and carry out cross border attacks in Pakistan.

Earlier in an interview with Reuters news agency, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi stressed the need for Pakistan-US close cooperation in the fight against terrorism. President Trump had wisely hinted to withdraw from the country but now he has reversed the policy by announcing to dispatch more troops in the hope of grabbing mineral resources of Afghanistan.

But, with Beijing investing upwards of $50 billion in Pakistan as part of its One Belt One Road project, USA aid has lost the sway it once held.

To a question, he said Pakistan had not received any specific demands from the USA and would take action if any information was shared.

Pakistan has responded to the threats of cutting off financial aid by saying it does not want USA aid, but rather acknowledgement of its efforts against extremism during the past few years.
