North Korean official insults Trump, touts nuclear program in United Nations speech

In comments to reporters in New York, North Korea's foreign minister said his country's leader is considering whether to demonstrate his ability to detonate a nuclear warhead aboard a missile sent above the Pacific Ocean.

Trump's threat of military action and his unwillingness to back down in the face of North Korean nuclear and missile tests are indeed in contrast to the positions held by previous US presidents.

Since time immemorial, Chinese leaders have always been considered North Korea's diplomatic protectors but now express increasing frustration with the government of Kim Jong Un.

Earlier in September, North Korea conducted its sixth and largest nuclear weapons test, and it has regularly conducted missile tests as rhetoric between it and the US has continued to rise.

Experts say this is the first time a North Korean leader has made a direct address to an worldwide audience - and it merits serious and thorough consideration.

"Trump labeled Kim a "madman" and taunted him as 'rocket man", while in a rare personal statement this week Kim lashed out, and referred to Trump as "mentally deranged" and a "dotard".

The flight, which was disclosed shortly before North Korea's foreign minister was due to address the United Nations, was the farthest north of the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea that any US fighter jet or bomber has flown in the 21st century, the Pentagon said.

China's seismic service CENC on Saturday detected a zero-depth, 3.4-magnitude natural disaster in North Korea, calling it a "suspected explosion".

The quake, which South Korea's Meteorological Agency put at magnitude 3.0, was detected 49 km from Kilju in North Hamgyong Province, where North Korea's known Punggye-ri nuclear site is located, the official said.

Kim's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said that the North is considering testing "an unprecedented scale hydrogen bomb" over the Pacific in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat at the United Nations to "totally destroy" the country.

U.S. Senator Gary Peters suggested another option for the president: "Looking at diplomatic ways to try to reduce the tensions, instead of throwing gasoline on them". He stressed that Trump's insults were an irreversible mistake, asserting that North Korean rockets will inevitably fall on the continental U.S.

If sanctions reach a critical point, North Korea "will hold those [countries] accountable", he said.

A secondary tremor detected after that test could have been caused by the collapse of a tunnel at the mountainous site, experts said at the time.

Kim on Friday threatened the "highest level of hard-line countermeasure in history" in a tirade against Trump's warning that Washington would "totally destroy" the North if the U.S. or its allies were threatened.

North Korea has launched dozens of missiles this year, several flying over Japan, as it accelerates its program aimed at enabling it to target the United States with a nuclear-tipped missile.

"And if the test doesn't go according to plan, you could have population at risk, too", he said.

The U.S. put its own sanctions on North Korea on Thursday, against banks or companies doing business with the country. One thing North Korea is extremely good at is absorbing pain.

Lu gave no explanation but added, "in principle, China has always implemented the U.N. Security Council's resolutions in their entirety and fulfilled our due responsibility".
