Overwatch Permanent Ban System Goes Live Next Week

This is perhaps one of the reasons why new heroes, maps, and game modes are delayed. Engen explained, "For example, if a player earned seasonal bans in Seasons 2 and 4, and then earns another ban in Season 7, he or she will be eligible for a permanent ban from Competitive Play".

Blizzard has released its latest update for Overwatch, which includes a new mechanic to fight "toxic" players. As part of Blizzard's ongoing efforts to create a more welcoming Overwatch environment as of next week it will start dishing out permanent bans.

In short, players who receive 3 or more seasonal bans may be permanently banned from Competitive Play, removing their ability to participate in any Comp games.

Blizzard would rather suspend or ban them, Kaplan said, as he noted how the moderation team has already meted out punishment to over 480,000 players. The first few offenses will result in restrictions from competitive play, with each offense lengthening the time of the player being suspended. The "Overwatch" system will permanently ban players if it detects that a third-party application is being used to automate any feature of the game, exploit bugs, or engage in any activity that brings unfair advantage to others. Playing full competitive games without leaving can put the account back into good standing, but continued penalties can result in seasonal bans.

Over 480,000 players have been disciplined for bad behaviour to date. A brief note in the patch notes also adds an interesting tidbit for players on Xbox Live. It only takes a couple or more disconnections to get punished.
