On Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that the French capital would host the 2024 Olympics, while Los Angeles was awarded the 2028 Games.

The Eiffel Tower had its head in the clouds and a small and very wet crowd on the other side of the River Seine huddled under umbrellas in front of a big screen to watch the International Olympic Committee announce in Lima, Peru, on Wednesday that the French capital will host the games in 2024.

The AP learned specifics of the agreement from a person familiar with the negotiations who did not want to be identified because the details have not been made public.

Officials from Paris and Los Angeles had stressed that their cities already have more than 90% of the facilities they need to host, reducing the additional cost.

IOC President Thomas Bach presented Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo with cards displaying Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.

Los Angeles then dropped its bid for the 2024 Olympics, for which it had been campaigning for over two years, in return for receiving the 2028 edition.

PARIS (AP) - Heavy rains took the fizz out of Paris' Olympic celebrations.

This time, no unpleasant surprises for Los Angeles and Paris.

The two cities are getting the hosting rights without the usual dramatic vote.

The award was extra-sweet for Paris after three previous failed bids - for the games of 1992, 2008 and 2012.

Dressed in a suit and Nike Air Force One trainers, Garcetti claimed their willingness to host the later event "was a reflection of our commitment" to the IOC and the Olympic Games.

They are looking into allegations of purchasing of votes by members of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) to ensure Rio would be picked as a host city by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
