This year's judges, chaired by Baroness Lola Young, revealed the six titles on Wednesday morning.

The chosen books cover a wide range of subjects, from the struggle of a family trying to retain its self-sufficiency in rural England to Hamid's love story of two refugees seeking to flee an unnamed city in the throes of civil war. "With six unique and intrepid books that collectively push against the borders of convention, this year's shortlist both acknowledges established authors and introduces new voices to the literary stage", said Young. They range from 29-year-old first novelist Fiona Mozley to 70-year old NY icon Paul Auster.

Hamid will be contending for the Man Booker Prize against five other finalists: Paul Auster's 4321, Emily Fridlund's History of Wolves, Fiona Mozley's Elmet, George Saunders' Lincoln in the Bardo and Ali Smith's Autumn.

United States author Paul Beatty won in 2016 was for his novel "The Sellout".

Shamsi took to Twitter to felicitate Hamid on the shortlisting.

In between the US-UK literary rivalry and the sweeping European themes in the novels of the shortlist, it is easy to wander off into premature judgements and predictions - like it happened with the inclusion of Arundhati Roy in the longlist - but digging deeper beyond most popular faces is "Exit West" by Mohsin Hamid, perhaps the most powerful contender for the prize.

Mozley, who works part-time in a small bookshop in York, has strong competition as she joins Ali Smith, George Saunders, Paul Auster, Mohsin Hamid and Emily Fridlund on this year's shortlist.

Half the authors on the shortlist - including the bookies' favourite to win, George Saunders for Lincoln In The Bardo - are United States authors. The list also features 2 debut novelists, one each from the U.S. and the UK. As well as playing an important role in recognising literary endeavour, the prize's charitable activities underscore Man Group's charitable focus on literacy and education and our commitment to creativity and excellence'.

The victor of the Man Booker Prize will be announced on October 17 in London's Guildhall, where the victor will take home a £50,000 (Rs 41 lakh) prize. The ceremony will be broadcast by the BBC.

The shortlisted authors each receive £2,500 and a specially bound edition of their book.

The victor of the Booker will receive a £50,000 prize. The majority of this year's shortlist is already available for readers in these formats. Previous winners of the prize, launched in 1969, include Ian McEwan and Iris Murdoch.
