Paul threatens to block defense bill amendments

Rand Paul likely to get a war vote

The US Senate is scheduled to vote on legislation aimed at repealing the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), a resolution which was adopted shortly after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, Senator Rand Paul said in an interview on Wednesday.

"If Congress can't even be bothered to vote on whether we should be in war, then we have no business sending young men and women to die fighting in it", Miles concluded.

On the Senate floor Tuesday, Paul argued that the current war against ISIS and Al Qaeda across the Middle East was illegal, and Congress should reassert its authority to declare war from the Executive Branch. "That war is long since over, the war has long since lost its goal, and its long time we had a debate in Congress over whether we should be at war or not".

But Paul could find support in both parties from the corner of the Capitol that has been pressing for a new war authorization since the United States began military operations against ISIS in 2014. "It is the constitutional role of congress". The White House, however, isn't looking for changes to the 2001 authorization, according to Legislative Director Marc Short.

While the failure of the amendment doesn't preclude future efforts at passing new AUMFs to cover America's many wars, it makes such debate a less pressing matter.

Senate leaders appear to have agreed to give Paul a vote on his amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act after he threatened to object to all other amendments, which would have effectively prevented any amendments from getting a vote on the massive defense policy bill. Paul, speaking in favor during the debate were Sens. Dean Heller (R-NV). It also gained bipartisan support from Senators like Sen.

Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin of IL and Kamala Harris of California have proposed an amendment to protect military personnel who are recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) authorization.

"Little did I realize having cast that vote, 15 or 16 years ago, that I wasn't just voting to go after the terrorists responsible for 9/11".

Despite the failure, Win Without War director Stephen Miles argues that the vote "shows that momentum is building to cancel the president's blank check for endless war", adding that "it's clear that our representatives in Congress are beginning to recognize that after almost two decades, the conflicts we are now fighting have a tenuous connection to the laws that are used to authorize them". "I think we're getting there". Rand Paul's bid to repeal congressional authorization for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan failed to get off the ground Wednesday, but more than a third of lawmakers showed their support for the Kentucky Republican's move.
