Katia made landfall at 10 p.m. CDT/11 p.m. EDT on Friday night, September 8 as a hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 75 miles per hour (120 kph) near Tecolutla, Mexico.

At the time Katia made landfall, it had maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.

Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century, walloped Cuba's northern coast on Saturday as it headed for Florida.

As USA Today reported, Hurricanes Jose and Katia are already on track to hit the southern United States this weekend. As of 5 am ET on Wednesday, maximum wind speeds were at 145 km/hr (90 mph) and these are expected to grow stronger over the next couple of days.

Lurking behind Irma is Hurricane Jose, which is gathering strength and threatens some of the same areas left devastated by Irma. A hurricane watch was also issued for the SC coast from the Georgia line to Edisto Beach, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) southwest of Charleston. Conagua is also warning waves of four to six meters in the coasts of Veracruz and the south of Tamaulipas are possible.

Such events tend to make the environment more hostile for Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes by increasing upper level winds, which can tear nascent storms apart.

The storm was expected to stall near the Sierra Madre Mountains, the centre said.

Katia is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches over northern Veracruz, eastern Hidalgo, and Puebla. Storms of Category 3 and above are defined as major hurricanes. Forecasters said this rainfall will likely cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in mountainous areas.

At 10 a.m. CDT (11 a.m. EDT/1500 UTC) on Saturday, Sept. 9, the National Hurricane Center issued the final advisory on Katia.
