Senators File Amendment to Delay Trans Military Ban

Two women senators - Republican Susan Collins and Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand - challenged President Donald Trump's military transgender ban by introducing an amendment on Monday blocking any exclusion based on gender identity alone.

Sens. Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY) and Susan Collins (R-ME) have teamed on an amendment to the NDAA that would protect transgender soldiers from Trump's bigoted attempts to kick them out of the military.

The Palm Center, a think tank that has long advocated for allowing out LGBTQ people to serve openly in the USA military, praised the senators' amendment, saying it would "prevent uncertainty and disruption" that could occur once Trump's ban is implemented and would save money that would otherwise be wasted recruiting and training new troops to replace those transgender individuals who were forcibly discharged.

"Any individual who wants to join our military and meets the standards should be allowed to serve, period".

Further, the proposal mandates that Secretary of Defense James Mattis continue with a report on transgender recruits and release the findings to Congress.

Collins was the lead Republican in the fight to end Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Any qualified American who is willing to serve should be allowed to do so, regardless of their gender identity.

However, the amendment stops short of directing the Pentagon to accept transgender people into the armed forces, putting off the decision on whether that will happen until the completion of the study.

"Legislative action now would prevent uncertainty and disruption following from a ban and save money that would be wasted recruiting and training replacements", Belkin said.

Nowhere mentioned in the amendment is USA military funding for gender reassignment surgery.

What the Trump policy ignores is that the issue has been studied. The legislation will need to be taken up for a vote, and then need 60 votes to make it into the higher chamber's version of the bill. Whether or not the amendment will obtain a vote is likely up to Sen.
