Senator Bernie Sanders Visits Missouri College Today

The speech focused on foreign policy concerns, but in light of current events, Sanders also condemned marches of Neo-Nazis and white supremacists in the USA and called on other politicians to unequivocally denounce them.

Even as the popular lawmaker built a national reputation and attracted millions of fans during his unsuccessful candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination previous year, he frequently faced criticism for talking too little about how he would tackle global affairs as president.

In the Missouri speech, Sanders endeavored to lay out his vision of "progressive American foreign policy", according to his staff. The senator will focus on the value of global cooperation and less US reliance on hard military power to pursue its goals around the world, rather than going into specific policy recommendations for hot spots like Syria, North Korea and elsewhere. This year, he already has more than a third of the Senate Democratic caucus on board.

If there was any doubt that Bernie Sanders is gearing up for another run for the presidency, his speech today in Fulton, Missouri removed it. Sanders appeared at the very spot where Winston Churchill pronounced in 1946 that Stalin was creating an iron curtain in Europe. The location is laden with symbolism. It's there that, in 1946, the British-American icon delivered the epoch-defining "Iron Curtain Speech", the origin of the concept of the Soviet Union trapping much of Europe behind an Iron Curtain and the idea of the "special relationship" between the US and the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Sanders emphasized solutions to worldwide issues through development and diplomacy.

Following Trump's first address to the United Nations, Sanders' speech could be seen as something of a response to the president's foreign policy agenda. We also see a rise in authoritarianism and right wing extremism-both domestic and foreign-which further weakens this order by exploiting and amplifying resentments, stoking intolerance and fanning ethnic and racial hatreds among those in our societies who are struggling.

"There are two things he's going to compare and contrast: the Iraq War, which most now agree was a disaster, and the Iran agreement, which is an example of how American leadership should work, where we used diplomacy and mobilized worldwide consensus to address a shared challenge", a Sanders aide told the Huffington Post.

Sanders identified climate change as a prime global challenge and slammed Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord as "incredibly foolish and short-sighted". But Sanders parted company with him (and Trump) in his indictment of Russian Federation. For now, he has put the Democratic party on edge, signalling that the dominance of the liberal hawks such as former United Nations ambassador Samantha Power will not go unchallenged.

Rats in the District got better coverage that day.

"If we are are going to expound the virtues of democracy and justice for all - and be taken seriously - we need to practice those values here at home", Sanders said.

According to excerpts obtained by The Daily Beast ahead of the speech, Sanders will argue that American interventionism overseas feeds the very problem it claims to be eradicating. "This isn't an area that anybody of the others who are talked about as possible presidential contenders has rushed out to define". However, Moreland said that the speech is part of the effort of the Democratic Party to find footing on foreign policy issues. "The movement if anything it's stronger than ever", said supporter Kurtis Wu. Instead, he said 'Some in Washington continue to argue that "benevolent global hegemony" should be the goal of our foreign policy, that the USA, by virtue of its extraordinary military power, should stand astride the world and reshape it to its liking. "He ensured that it did not have almost the impact it might have", Bennis said.

Sanders' speech was notable for its criticisms of the War on Terror and suggestions that worldwide conflicts, including the dispute between the USA and North Korea over the latter's potential development and use of nuclear weapons, could be solved through diplomatic means. Sixteen senators signed on as co-sponsors, and a groundswell of Americans is behind it. Younger Americans now see domestic problems in the U.S.as inherently tied to worldwide issues, Hurlburt noted.
