Seoul says natural 3-magnitude North Korea quake detected

North Korea: Tremor detected in north east

Its initial view was that it was a natural quake.

North Korea has been struck by a 3.4 scale natural disaster that China says may have been caused by an explosion.

The "quake" occurred at approximately 08:30 GMT (16:29 local time) on Saturday, reports South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

The agency said it was analysing the nature of the quake and its initial view was that it was a natural tremor because no sound waves specific to man-made earthquakes were detected.

The North's last test, on September 3, was the country's most powerful detonation, triggering a much stronger 6.3-magnitude quake that was felt across the border in China.

If it is confirmed as a nuclear test, it would be the North Korean regime's seventh.

A secondary tremor detected after that test could have been caused by the collapse of a tunnel at the mountainous site, experts said at the time.

Resuming peace talks was just as much a part of the United Nations resolutions as enforcing sanctions, Wang said, according to a statement issued by China's Foreign Ministry late on Friday.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute says developments in North Korea's nuclear program "contributed to international political instability with potentially serious knock-on effects".

Washington announced tougher restrictions Friday aimed at curbing North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programme, building on tough new United Nations sanctions aimed at choking Pyongyang of cash.

Hereditary North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un in turn threatened to test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean.

The elder Kono recently raised eyebrows when he appeared to criticise his son's government, saying there should be more cooperation with China over North Korea.
