Some of President Donald Trump's legal team believed that his son-in-law Jared Kushner should have stepped aside before reports about his failure to disclose contacts with Russians during the transition became public this summer, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. The recommendation, though not unanimously endorsed by the president's growing legal representation, made it to the president's desk, where Trump dismissed it because of his belief that Kushner hadn't done anything wrong, according to the Journal.

While the legal team wasn't unanimous in wanting Kushner to step down, press aides to the legal team had drafted a statement to explain his departure, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

One of the scrutinized meetings that prompted Kushner's testimony was between members of Trump's campaign team and a Russian lawyer promising compromising information on Hillary Clinton at Trump Tower.

Marc Kasowitz, Trump's longtime lawyer who headed his legal team through mid-July, said he never discussed Kushner's resignation with other lawyers nor did he recommend Kushner step down to the president.

Lawyers also noted that Kushner failed to accurately report his contact with foreign officials when applying for his security clearance, according to the Wall Street Journal's report.

Kushner appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee in July to speak about the meeting, which he called a "waste of our time".

Trump contended there was no need for Kushner to resign, according to the report.

Of particular concern to these lawyers was a meeting with a Russian attorney at Trump Tower in NY along with Donald Trump, Jr.in July, 2016.

"I didn't agree with that view at all". Trump's lawyers came to this conclusion in June because they viewed Kushner as a legal complication in the Russian Federation probe. "I thought it was absurd", lawyer John Dowd told the Journal.
