Soul legend Charles Bradley, who was affectionately dubbed "the Screaming Eagle of Soul", has passed away after a bout with cancer.

An heartfelt statement from the Brooklyn-born singer's team read: "It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Charles Bradley".

'Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this hard time'.

Bradley was diagnosed with stomach cancer past year and beat the cancer, but it came back recently and spread to his liver.

Bradley called off 37 dates until the end of the year in North America, South America and Europe.

Like fellow Daptones singer Sharon Jones, who also succumbed to cancer, Bradley achieved stardom late in his life.

A Florida native, Bradley as a teenager in NY discovered soul legend James Brown at the Apollo Theater and later found a career as an impersonator. Six years later, his sister took him to see James Brown at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and has was instantly inspired by the Godfather of Soul's music and dynamic stage presence. After running away from home at 14, he lived and worked in ME as a chef before travelling through Seattle, Canada and Alaska before settling in California. Though he would come to live a good portion of his life in Alaska and San Francisco, he returned to NY 20 years ago.

Bradley released his debut LP No Time for Dreaming in 2011 at age 62, followed by his sophomore album Victim of Love in 2013. Subsequent releases included 2013's Victim Of Love and Changes which came out a year ago. That record gained recognition for its title song, a soulful re-working of the Black Sabbath ballad. He spent much of his life itinerant, performing at one point in ME - where his band was disbanded due to the Vietnam draft, as he told the Chicago Tribunein 2011.

"When I come back, I'll come back strong, with God's love".
