'Star Wars: Episode 9': JJ Abrams to Write & Direct, Release Date Delayed

Abrams' hiring follows the split between Lucasfilm and Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow. But it hasn't been plain sailing for Lucasfilm, which has parted company with several of its directors recently, starting with Josh Trank, who dropped out of developing a Star Wars spinoff in 2015, citing the enormous pressures of being involved with the franchise. At the same time, pushing the movie back to December will in no way hurt the film's profits, as Star Wars will continue to hold a tight grip on the holiday season's box office and merchandise sales for the rest of this decade.

I'm convinced he'll do a fine job at completing the latest trilogy he so successfully began and breathed new life into. When Episode IX unexpectedly lost its director, indie darling Colin Trevorrow, they found a replacement for him within a week. In August, British screenwriter and playwright Jack Thorne was brought onboard to rewrite the script. When directing The Force Awakens, Abrams was an integral player in writing the story for the film and may now do the same for the concluding chapter.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said that Abrams "delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for" on "The Force Awakens" and added "I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy".

However, Rian Johnson is directing the second in the current trilogy, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which will be released this December. Primarily, he just thought that it would be draining to direct two Star Wars films in consecutive succession. Apart from directing, Abrams will also co-write the movie along with Chris Terrio. Before Trevorrow left Episode IX, Disney also removed the directors Christopher Miller and Phillip Lord in favor of Ron Howard for the Han Solo stand-alone film.

"It's in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens", he said. He has also been one of the executive producers of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi'".

In another interview Johnson also revealed that the film is nearly ready, so it's a good time for Star Wars fans to get excited.
