Stephen King's 'It' dominates North American box office in opening weekend

It's the best opening weekend for a horror movie, with Paranormal falling into second place and that made $52m (£39m); and it's set to have the second-biggest weekend ever for an R-rated movie (a United Kingdom equivalent of a 15 rating), with only Deadpool likely to have done better. The previous record stood at $48.5 million.

Regarding plans for the next movie, Goldstein said, "It puts more pressure on us to come up with the best version of the story so we bring fans what they want to see".

So, if you weren't scared by the new movie then it might be worth waiting for the sequel to get a proper fright. IGN also noted that "It" has earned the biggest opening for a Stephen King adaptation. A handful of hits, like "Despicable Me 3" and Warner's "Wonder Woman", took most of the buzz.

On top of all that: However the final weekend tally falls - the current number is only an estimate - it's already clear that It earned more in its opening weekend than the other nine movies listed in the weekend's Top 10 combined.

Warner Bros.' supernatural horror film "Annabelle: Creation" took fourth place with an estimated 4 million US dollars in its fifth weekend. The $15 million project was directed by Hallie Meyer-Shyer, the daughter of Nancy Meyers, who also worked on the film as a producer.

The prior year, Warner assigned oversight of "It" to its New Line Cinema unit. "Generally, horror films draw younger moviegoers", Paul Dergarabedian, a box-office analyst at ComScore, told Quartz. It likes to prey upon innocent people and most frequently children. Rather than rely heavily on jump scares or gore, this two-hour and fifteen minute fright-fest is a story deeply rooted in character above all else. Last year's hit Netflix Inc. series "Stranger Things", itself inspired by "It", also took place in the 1980s. "In hindsight, that was the right call", he noted.

This doesn't just beat the record for the best opening weekend haul for a Stephen King movie, it utterly devours it. It has earned almost six times the amount of money that its nearest competition, 2007's 1408, made over that same length of time.

Reviews were solid if not spectacular, and opening night audiences gave "It" an average grade of B+, according to market research firm CinemaScore.

The seven children from the movie watch Pennywise descend down the tunnel.
