Syrian activist and daughter found murdered in Istanbul home

M - An American-born journalist and her mother, who were active in opposition to the Syrian regime, were found murdered in Istanbul, ABC NEWS said.

Homicide officers are investigating the latest deaths - there have been four previous killings of Syrian journalists in Turkey, all of which the Islamic State group said it carried out.

She was the cousin of Deah Barakat, who was one of three murder victims in what became to be known as the Chapel Hill shootings in the U.S. state of North Carolina in February 2015. A fifth journalist survived two attacks. Following the break-in, they stabbed the women with a knife.

She said her sister and her family had been critical of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and suggested that the government may be behind the killings. She later travelled to America where she gave birth to her daughter.

"At the age of 60, Orouba Barakat had signed very important interviews with opponents who were tortured in prisons in Syria".

Aroubeh Barakat's sister Shaza confirmed the deaths in a Facebook post, saying the two "were assassinated at the hands of injustice and tyranny".

She was a member of the opposition national council and was a well-known as a supporter of the revolution and as a critic of opposition institutions.

Describing her cousin, Suzanne Barakat wrote: "I'll always remember Halla, whose name means beauty, as the little girl with golden curls and bright green eyes".

Friends raised the alarm after being unable to reach Aroubeh Barakat and her daughter Halla Barakat by telephone, the news agency said. Earlier this year, she took part in a talk titled "Russia destroyed Syria".

The media advocacy group, Reporters Without Borders, has called on Turkey's government to protect Syrian journalists in exile in the country.

This version corrects the slain activist's name to Orouba and corrects her daughter's age to 23.
