Target Corp. announced a major investment for the holiday shopping season.

Target is hiring 100,000 people to work during the hectic holiday shopping season, up 40 percent from past year.

Same-store sales in the final two months of last year fell 1.3 percent at Target, the company's worst holiday results in three years. The retailer also plans to hire 4,500 people to help pack and ship online orders at its warehouses.

"Target team members play such an important role in helping guests as they prepare to celebrate the holidays with their families", Chief Stores Officer Janna Potts said.

Both Target and Walmart are trying to hold their own against Amazon.com, which is encroaching on multiple fronts.

Target's 2017 holiday hiring marks a significant increase from previous year, when the retailer hired 70,000 employees.

The second largest general merchandise retailer in the US, according to its website, is hiring 30,000 more people than it did during the same time period past year.

Target will hold seasonal hiring events from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. on October 13-15 at each of its stores.

Joel Bines, head of retail practice and a managing director at consulting firm AlixPartners, says Target's holiday hiring strategy indicates how hiring related to online services is moving to the stores.
