9/11 stair climb

CAL FIRE SLO and Templeton Firefighters climbed more than 2,500 stairs, equivalent to the 110 flights of stairs first responders climbed in the Twin Towers 16 years ago. The effort is to honor the 343 FDNY firefighters killed in the 9/11 attacks.

At 8:47, the moment of the first attack, more than 100 local firefighters and first responders start the trek up 110 stories- the height of the fallen World Trade Center towers.

Registration is now open for the Premier Health Yellow Springs 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, which is a way for firefighters, EMTs, law enforcement officers and community members to honor and remember the first responders who selflessly gave their lives so that others may live on September 11, 2001.

Each participant was given the name of a first responder to climb in memory of.

The first such climb was done September 11, 2005 when five Colorado firefighters met at a high-rise to walk up 110 flights of stairs in memory of those killed in the attacks. Organizers said the event raised over $25,000.

Proceeds from the event go to the Firefighter Aide, a San Diego-based nonprofit organization that helps support firefighters and their families.

The event was one of several stair-climb events held throughout the region Monday. The next year, 12 firefighters from four area departments did the climb.
