Theatre and opera director Sir Peter Hall has died at the age of 86.

Whereas Toby Stephens paid tribute and tweeted "so sad to hear the death of "Sir Peter Hall". The documentary will be broadcast on BBC4 on Tuesday 12th September at 9pm.

He founded the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960 and led it until 1968, said the reports.

He became assistant director at London's small Arts Theatre in 1954, taking over the directorship a year later.

From staging the English-language premiere of Waiting for Godot, to founding the Royal Shakespeare Company, to leading The National Theatre of Great Britain during its pivotal move from its original home at the Old Vic to its purpose-built facilities on the Southbank, Sir Peter was at the core of English-language theatre for the second half of the 20th century.

"All of us, including those in the new generation of theater-makers not immediately touched by his influence, are in his debt. His legendary tenacity and vision created an extraordinary and lasting legacy for us all".

Sir Peter's many productions for the RSC included Hamlet (1965, with David Warner), The Government Inspector (1966, with Paul Scofield), the world premiere of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming (1965) and The Wars of the Roses (1963) adapted with John Barton from Shakespeare's history plays. Without him there would have been no Royal Shakespeare Company.

Sir Trevor Nunn once said that Hall had "changed theatre from ancient to modern".

Doran said that Hall had a "phenomenal energy", adding: "He was not just a great director of theatre and opera, he was a politician, he fought for the arts, he was a great innovator and I would say that his greatest legacy has to be the RSC, of which I am very proud to be his follower". Throughout his career, Hall worked closely with authors such as Harold Pinter and Peter Shaffer, whose play Amadeus, about a rivalry that Mozart had with a composer named Antonio Salieri, started at the National and became an worldwide sensation.

Sir Patrick said that the director "transformed classical and modern United Kingdom theatre and gave me a career".

"We all stand on the shoulders of giants and Peter Hall's shoulders supported the entirety of British theater as we know it", said National Theater director Rufus Norris in a statement.

Hall's landmark work as a theater director in the United Kingdom included John Barton's nine-hour epic Tantalus (2000), As You Like It (2003, with his daughter Rebecca Hall) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (2010, with Judi Dench). He was artistic director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera (1984 to 1990) where he directed more than twenty productions. "A great director and shaper of British Theatre". His last production at the National Theater was "Twelfth Night" in 2011.

Hall continued directing plays and operas around the world, until he retired in 2011.

Survivors include his wife, scriptwriter Nicki Frei, and children including actress Rebecca Hall.
