Arsenal therefore faced something of a quandary on Wednesday night, just 24 hours from the transfer deadline as Wenger reportedly frets over finding a replacement.

Arsenal have had an absolutely torrid summer, with their top players refusing to sign contract extensions, with Alexis Sanchez being the most prominent.

Arsenal forward Sanchez is the subject of interest from Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, while Liverpool have repeatedly rebuffed Barcelona's attempts to lure Brazil playmaker Coutinho to Camp Nou.

Arsenal have insisted that Sanchez is not for sale even though he only has one year left on his contract.

Wenger said last week that a move for Monaco's Thomas Lemar was "dead" as the Ligue 1 champions did not want to sell, although links with Liverpool continue.

Formerly with Barcelona, Sanchez joined Arsenal in the summer of 2014 and has proved to be a superb signing.

They are also favourites to sign Kylian Mbappe on loan from Monaco with an option to buy him next summer for another hefty fee reported to be around £167m.

Sources have told Goal that Fabian Delph has also been proposed by City as the Premier League rivals aim to thrash out a mutually benefical agreement before the transfer window shuts on Thursday.

The Sky Sports pundit has confirmed that Arsenal requested that Man City offered Raheem Sterling as part of the deal. Latest reports from the Daily Express suggest that Arsenal are keen on a swap deal for Alexis Sanchez, with Sergio Aguero going the other way. Glenn Price reports from Anfield after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain completes his move from Arsenal.

The Chilean newspaper have been pushing Sanchez to Manchester City since December, and if it happens then the whole thing can start again, a renewed excitement that El Nino Maravilla will fire his club to glory.
