Trump and Kim call each other mad

Mr Trump responded with a tweet calling Kim Jong-un "a madman" who "will be tested like never before!"

The U.S. president vowed to unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea, used the nickname "Rocket Man" for Kim, and at the United Nations on Tuesday threatened to "totally destroy" the North if provoked.

Kim said Trump's comments were reflective of "mentally deranged behavior".

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has called North Korea's decision to test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean a "crazy" idea.

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un complained in a defiant statement released by North Korea's KNCA state media of Trump's strong statements, saying they "had never been heard from any of his predecessors".

The term got people scrambling for a dictionary to look up what the word could possibly mean.

"I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire", Kim said in the statement carried by the KCNA state news agency.

Though the majority of North Korea's imports come from China, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said "This action is directed at everyone" and the steps are "in no way specifically directed at China". Along with Russia, China wants the U.S.to seek dialogue with the North.

Earlier this month the U.N. Security Council passed a new resolution with sanctions on North Korea.

Washinton and Pyongyang have been at loggerheads over North Korea's nuclear programme in recent months.

"We can not deny the possibility it may fly over our country", he said.

The phrase "highest level of hard-line countermeasure in history" could be considered an escalation in the choice of language used, said Vipin Narang, a professor of political science at MIT and expert on deterrence and nuclear policy.

'Why would you test a mechanism to put millions and millions of people in a microwave?' He said on Friday.

Tests of nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles are rarer still. "It is truly terrifying if something goes wrong".

In a one-and-only such test in 1962, the USA launched a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile from a submerged submarine.

North Korea says it needs to have a nuclear deterrent because the United States intends to invade it. Analysts say the North is likely to soon achieve its objective of possessing nuclear missiles capable of reaching any part of the US homeland.

Kim said Trump is "unfit to hold the prerogative of supreme command of a country".

Kim said he is "thinking hard" about his response and that he would "tame the mentally deranged U".

But the original is nearly as unusual as the translation: the North Korean leader referred to Mr Trump as a "늙다리미치광이" ("neulg-dali-michigwang-i"), which translates as an "old beast lunatic" according to a South Korean journalist.

Trump's executive order expanded the Treasury Department's ability to target anyone conducting significant trade in goods, services or technology with North Korea, and to ban them from interacting with the USA financial system. Asked for comment last week, the Foreign Ministry said China has always fully implemented United Nations sanctions on North Korea but opposes "unilateral" restrictions imposed by another country on Chinese entities.
