The building has since been cordoned off and police and state investigators have opened a criminal investigation into the deaths of residents, whose ages range from 71 to 99. Scott said the state has had multiple points of contact with the facility before the Wednesday's deaths.

"People are telling me different things", she said Wednesday evening. "If you have a generator, please make sure you operate it safely".

"We believe at this time they may be related to the loss of power in the storm", Hollywood Police Chief Tom Sanchez said, adding that the deaths are believed to be heat-related. The Greater Miami Jewish Federation encouraged people to evacuate before the storm if they could, but the group has shifted its focus to checking on them and bringing supplies to their homes, said CEO Jacob Solomon.

"I never even knew a Category 5 existed", the president told reporters at the White House Thursday, at a reception following his return from Florida where at least 26 people have been killed by the massive storm, according to the Miami Herald.

People who fled their homes in hard-hit islands including St. Martin and the U.S. Virgin Islands that were all but cut off from the world for days arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico, late Tuesday.

Gov. Rick Scott announced Thursday night that he has directed the Agency for Health Care Administration to terminate the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills as a Medicaid provider. At issue is whether the nursing home clearly identified its power problems to authorities, whether the power company reacted in a timely manner and whether local emergency management officials took adequate steps to ensure the facility was operating properly.

More than 100 people were evacuated from a Florida nursing home Wednesday after six people were reported dead at the Hollywood facility, whose residents were suffering from intense heat caused by a lack of electricity after deadly Hurricane Irma swept through.

Aerial footage showed patients sitting outside in wheelchairs and others being taken out of the facility on stretchers.

He called the impacts a "real disaster" and said there's "much work do" but that Florida "will be rebuilt and will come back even better than before".

The state says it is working to restore power to assisted living facilities and nursing homes in the impacted areas.

Glendale Owens, the daughter of one of the men who died, said she last visited her father in the nursing home Monday and everything seemed fine.

A state inspection of the facility a year ago found a series of violations including multiple "medication errors", "overflowing trash in bins", and general "disrepair" leaving many wondering why the facility was still open.

At least 56 of Florida's 639 nursing homes are still without power, according to CBS News.
