He issued a warning to extremists, saying "America can not be intimidated" and those who try will join the list of enemies "who dared to test our mettle".

At the Pentagon, Trump will receive "a comprehensive picture of the terrorist threat environment and what we're doing to counter it from his senior officials on 9/11", Homeland Security adviser Tom Bossert said on Friday.

Photo Mr. and Mrs. Trump gathered on the South Lawn with White House staff members for a moment of silence on Monday.

The morning remembrance is scheduled for about the time the first plane struck one of the Twin Towers on the morning of September 11, 2001.

Then, victims' relatives began reading the names of the almost 3,000 people killed when four hijacked planes hit the trade center, the Pentagon and at the Pennsylvania field.

"No terrorist should view us as vulnerable right now, farthest thing from the truth", Bossert said. "Our nation will prevail and the memory of our loved ones will never ever die". "We are making claim to these savage killers that there is no dark corner beyond our reach, no sanctuary beyond our grasp, and nowhere to hide-anywhere-on this very large earth".

"America does not bend".

Trump said the attackers had tried to break American resolve but had failed. And when we face hardship, we emerge closer, stronger and more determined than ever.

Meanwhile, Vice President Pence led the ceremony in Shanksville, where Flight 93 crashed into an open field at 10:03 a.m. 16 years ago.

He added, "American forces are relentlessly pursuing and destroying the enemies, [.] but we're ensuring that they never again have a safe haven to launch attacks against our country".
