Trump Travel Ban Expanded To Eight Countries

Trump expands travel ban to N.Korea, Chad

Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia remained on the list of affected countries in a proclamation issued by the president on Sunday night, while restrictions on citizens from Sudan were lifted.

The Trump administration announced new restrictions late Sunday on visitors from eight countries, a replacement of Donald Trump's Muslim travel ban.

The White House said North Korea did not co-operate with the U.S. government "in any respect" and failed all requirements for travel to the USA.

The White House Press Release reads, "As President, I must act to protect the security and interests of the United States and its people". For Syria and North Korea, all entries are suspended while restrictions in visas will apply to others, granting exceptions for student and exchange visas in the case of Iran, and suspending mostly government officials from Venezuela.

Donald Trump took a break from tweeting about sports teams on Sunday to issue a new travel ban on an expanded list of seven countries, just as the previous, widely-detested order was on the brink of expiring.

The order also blocks visas for government officials on business or tourist travel from Venezuela.

Refugees are not mentioned in the new executive order, but officials told The Times that those rules would be announced in the next few days.

"Each of the countries will be under its own set of travel restrictions, though in most cases citizens of the countries will be unable to emigrate to the United States personally and most will be barred from coming to work, study or vacation in America", the report noted.

The White House said the listed countries "continue to have "inadequate" identity-management protocols, information-sharing practices, and risk factors".

"The inclusion of those countries, Venezuela and North Korea, was about the fact that those governments are simply not compliant with our basic security requirements".

"Six of President Trump's targeted countries are Muslim", ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said in a statement. USA officials fear that vetting procedures attending visa issuance in a number of countries with high instances of terror are not sufficiently vigorous.

About 1,000 Americans traveled to North Korea annually before the incident. Citizens from Iraq will face "additional scrutiny" but won't face blanket bans. The 90-day ban, which expired Sunday, was widely opposed by colleges and universities concerned about the flow of worldwide students and scholars to their campuses.
