Turkey set to buy Russian missile defence system

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the regional developments in a phone call on Saturday, presidential sources said.

Russia confirmed the agreement, with Vladimir Kozhin, Russian President Vladimir Putin's adviser for military cooperation, saying: "The contract has been signed and is being prepared for implementation".

The accord, Ankara's most significant weapons purchase from a non-NATO supplier, has raised concerns in the West over technical compatibility with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation equipment.

A Pentagon spokesman criticised the procurement decision, saying it is "generally not a good idea" for members of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to buy inter-operable apparatus.

Erdogan said he and Putin were "determined on this issue".

"We make the decisions about our own independence ourselves", Erdogan said on September 12. The process will continue by the transfer of a credit from Russian Federation to us. Bloomberg said back then that the agreement would see Russian Federation send two S-400 systems to Turkey by the end of 2018, and then help the country domestically produce two more.

Kozhin told Russia's state-owned TASS news agency that all aspects of the deal "strictly comply with our strategic interests".

Moscow has accepted Ankara's expressions of regret over the incident and the two countries have revived the relationship since then.

" Turkey has also repeatedly demanded, without success, that the United States extradite Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish preacher who lives in Pennsylvania and is accused by Ankara of being behind a failed coup against Erdogan in July 2016".
