Video Shows Conditions Inside Hollywood Nursing Home Evening Before Residents Died

US President Donald Trump says devastation left by Hurricane Irma was far greater than anyone expected

The hospital has set up a hotline, 954-265-1074, so that families of nursing home residents can check on their loved ones.

"These people are basically prisoners in their own homes", said Pembroke Pines City Manager Charlie Dodge.

"I am outraged over the deaths of eight Floridians at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills in Broward County and I am demanding answers as we furiously investigate this bad loss of life", Scott said in a statement on Saturday.

The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills said in a timeline released by its public relations firm that it repeatedly called emergency hotline numbers and the power utility for help after the air-conditioning system failed.

"We are devastated by these losses", Carballo said. "We are fully cooperating with all authorities and regulators to assess what went wrong and to ensure our other residents are cared for".

The woman with the camera then goes out into the hallway, where a naked woman who appears to be sleeping or unconscious is slouched on a gurney.

The recording shows the facility had power but workers were using an industrial-size drum fan sitting in front of two closed doors to move air through a hallway.

But on some other quality indicators, the nursing home was below average.

Altogether, more than 100 patients there were found to be suffering in the heat and were evacuated, many on stretchers or in wheelchairs. The first occurred Tuesday at the facility; that individual had a "do not resuscitate" order and the deceased was transferred to a funeral home, but authorities have now retrieved the body.

It wouldn't last long.

The super storm made its land fall on South-western Florida on Sunday morning as a Category 4 hurricane, after that on Monday it weakened and got converted into a tropical depression.

Multiple nursing homes and assisted living centers in Florida have evacuated their residents after losing electric power.

The utility said it urges facilities with patients dependent on electricity-powered equipment, and who don't have power, to call 911 if there is a life-threatening situation.

"She was a friend", Johnson said.

The governor's communications director, John Tupps, did not respond to questions about whether Hollywood Hills had called Scott but said all calls from nursing homes were "referred to the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Florida Department of Health and quickly returned".

The home also had serious issues with the maintenance and testing of its emergency generator, as well as with fire and safety standards, according to February 2016 reports by Florida state inspectors.

Federal officials say that nursing homes normally reserved for veterans will be opened up to non-veteran nursing home residents if space is available, in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

"The federal government is laying down a lot of resources".

Harrison is on the Florida Health Innovation subcommittee which oversees legislation governing Florida nursing homes.

On Friday, a Miami law firm filed a complaint against the Hollywood facility on behalf of the family of Albertina Vega, a 99-year-old patient who was one of the eight people who died.

Pimentel says a medical examiner will have to determine a cause of death, but there were no obvious signs of foul play.

The first call for help from the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills came around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, with staffers claiming one elderly patient had gone into cardiac arrest after the nursing home had been left without power for several days.

Three agencies have launched investigations into how this happened, but many questions remain unanswered.

Gov. Rick Scott said officials were in contact with the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills over the past three days.

The 152-bed rehab center provides short-term rehabilitative services and long-term care, according to its website.

Veroy's father had a 102-degree temperature, she said. "There are not as many beds and facilities available as there are people with needs".

Later that day, the center discovered a tree had landed on a transformer and reported that to the county, which in turn alerted FPL, Sharief said. "If you go back into the Teens, you'll see storms that were as big or bigger".

"I've been there sometimes when it didn't", she said.
